  • Dates (sweetener also known as dabino) – 1 handful
  • Cloves (kayan kanshi) – 2 tablespoons

How to Prepare Tom Brown Powder Step-by-step

f you want to make your own Tom Brown powder, here is a simple guide to get you started. Firstly, separate your grains into individual trays and pick out any stones or foreign particles. Then, wash each grain separately and spread them out on a flat surface to dry in the sun. Once your grains are completely dry, pack them into separate bowls. Next, toast your corn in a wide frying pan, but be careful not to burn it. Also, roast your groundnut, millet, and soya beans until they become golden brown. After toasting, allow the grains to cool down. To remove the outer shell/seed coat (known as chaff) of the soya beans, grind them gently with a mortar and pestle.

When you are done, sift the chaff away by breezing it out. Put the ground mixture into a bowl. Now, grind your crayfish, ginger, and Kayan Kanshi either with a mortar and pestle or with a blender. Once everything is ground, mix all the ingredients together in a bowl. You can then blend the mixture with a high-power blender or take it to a local mill for blending. Do not add water while blending.

Once you have your ingredients ground, place them in a bowl. Now, break open and discard the seeds inside your dates (dabino). Then crush the outer fruit with a blender or mortar and pestle and add the pieces to the bowl. Mix all the ingredients together and then blend the mixture in a high-power blender or take it to a local mill to blend. Make sure not to add any water when blending. Once the powder is finished, spread it out on a wide tray and let it cool completely.

Finally, sieve the mixture to remove any chaff, which will leave you with a smoother powder. And there you have it: your homemade Tom brown powder is ready! Store it in an airtight container and it’s ready to use whenever you like. Enjoy!
